Yahoo #2 Update

Yesterday, I posted about some crappy Yahoo SERPS I was getting.

I did mention in the post that it was more than likely a temporary glitch. But I didn’t include a screen cap of what I was seeing. (That would have helped the post to make sense even after the problem was fixed.)

So for the record, I thought I would quickly explain exactly what was happening.

Normally, when you search for a term on Yahoo you will never get more than two listings from the same site in the results. However, that clustering feature wasn’t working yesterday. If you searched for a word that appeared on dozens of pages from a single site, Yahoo would show all of them before listing any pages from additional domains.

Lack of clustering makes SERPS virtually worthless. And I can’t think of any other glitches that will cause people to think your results suck quicker than lack of clustering.

But the good news is the problem appears to be fixed. (Hopefully, it will stay that way).

What, you’re not running Google Desktop Search? That’s the main reason I like it: it’s like a safety net so I can reconstruct a page if I need to. Which has saved my bacon from time to time..

Greg, sorry this is completely off topic… but Matt brought it up. Am I a complete moron or do all desktop search products suck if you archive your mail?

Well, maybe clustering wasn’t working yesterday if Y! listed more than the two TW pages I saw a few minutes ago. Not so sure about the Google DeskStop (which phones home and hogs resources). I used the original version to test it for a while, but I found it unacceptably slowed down the machine. It may be faster now, but I’d guess not by enough for me.
