Isn’t there a big risk in doing a nofollow / dofollow blog. I mean, how long will it really take for Google to notice this and issue penalties for such un-natural commenting and linking?

I don’t think Google will ever come out and say that all blogs must be nofollow. But they do say that a dofollow link is basically you vouching for the particular site. I personally don’t have a problem with Google passing judgment on the the quality of my editorial discretion, because I don’t allow all the lame, one line, keyword stuffed crap to ever go live.

All brand new posters to this blog go through moderation first. If I approve their initial post, they can post again unmoderated, but if they come back the second time and post crap, they get forever banned. That’s how my blog worked before WordPress made nofollow default, it’s how it worked when everything was nofollow, and it’s how it works now that I run a plugin that gives me greater control.

Of course, all that doesn’t mean that Google will never take action against some dofollow blogs. It just means their wrath will be restricted to the blogs that are allowing all the crap. (you know, the ones so many real estate agents abuse).

I am considering installing the dofollow plugin on our company website which runs on Wordpress as well. Would like to know if you think about the website being linked to before approving comments on your blog, Greg, or don’t you think Google puts any weight on the quality of your outbound links?

I just figure it would be a hassle to have to check every website out before approving comments (not that we have that many yet since we just started out :) )

    all the best,

With the update the nofollow/follow toggle now shows up under the comments section, however it does not appear to do anything.

I’m having the same problem as John.

I installed the plugin and have the controls in the comment section. Toggling them changes in the comments section from NoFollow to Follow but does not seem to affect the post.

I’m not sure what the problem is. I just turned it on on your comment and it’s working fine for me.

It conflicts with some other plug-ins that manipulate comments. Turn off your plug-ins and start adding them one-by-one till you find the one that breaks it, turned out I didn’t even use the darn thing that was conflicting with it, so I just removed it. Sorry, I don’t recall which one it was, wish I would have made note of it now to help others. I’d start by turning off any plugins that have something to do with comments and nofollow like some ‘SEO’ type plugins.

Thanks for the plug in bro. I’m on Blogger right now but we will be moving to Word Press soon and this will come in handy.

Any news on whether this will be upgraded to work with WordPress 2.5+ anytime soon? Cheers
