Google Funding Terrorism?

If you haven’t heard this story yet, don’t worry. I’m sure it will be all over the place by tomorrow morning. I wouldn’t even be surprised if it made tomorrow’s evening news.

In a way, I feel bad for Google because many people will jump on this simply because it has so much digg juice. That’s not to say the information being released isn’t credible, because I think it is. (I had an opportunity to review quite a bit of it before it went public)

But it will ultimately be spun by many people that Google has known that their ads are running on pro-terrorist sites, and they just don’t care. I’m just not ready to believe they are that evil.

But it does go a long way in exposing the biggest problem with the whole Adsense program, which is the complete lack of human editorial control. Forget the terrorism angle for a minute. Just take a look at all the MFA garbage that pollutes the web. The only reason it exists is because you only need to get a single site approved by a human Googler.

Now that’s a great policy if you’re spammin’ & jammin’ but it’s pretty irresponsible thing for Google to allow from a “do know evil” perspective. Crap like this wouldn’t happen if you had to get each site you wanted Adsense on approved. But that of course would require a much greater commitment in terms of human resources. It would also slow things up quite a bit, and that in turn would mean less revenue.

This story is going to be interesting to watch….

Nice to see you started to blog again. I agree with you on this. Whether Google intends to do it or not, the fact that they stand so high and mighty with their “it doesnt exist” or the recent less than 2% claims will end up being what makes them take a harder fall.

Plus everyone expects the big dog to be perfect all the time.

I wonder if the idea of terrorism will involve the government or give them more power to request info they have been wanting from Google.

Got something to say?
