A Grammar Lesson From Danny Sullivan

Danny has been on a tear as of late. In the latest post from his new blog, he points out some grammar issues in the DOJ Google subpoena. :)

Matt Cutts On SEO Rockstars

I’m thrilled to announce that Matt Cutts will be joining us on SEO Rockstars this coming Tuesday. (4:00 pm Pacific Time). Matt’s agreed to consider answering whatever questions (other than Google vs. the government) we can come up with, so if you have some SEO questions you’d like us to ask, go ahead and post them either here, or on Todd’s blog.

Link Data and Drunken Whores

Google is now showing anywhere between 450,000 and 2,700,00 pages (depending on the data center) for v7ndotcom elursrebmem.

The backlink data for the top 10 is now starting to show some interesting stuff like blog spam and some user-agent cloaking.

Top 10 Merged Backlinks

John Scott was also gracious enough to add me to his list of recommended blogs (using the anchor text "drunken whore")

Thank’s John.

MSN Doesn’t Love Me Anymore

I just received a "Dear John" letter from my buddies at MSN Search:

Greg,

Thank you for expressing interest in attending MSN Search Champs v4. Unfortunately, due to a huge amount of very qualified responses, we are unable to extend invitations to everyone that wanted to attend. However we are already planning for Champs v5, so keep an eye out for future opportunities to join us in Redmond.

As we noted in our privacy policy, we are not keeping your survey information on file for any future events or contact.

Again, thanks for your interest and we hope to see you at a future Champs!

Now, I’m not really upset that they found somone to replace me. But I do think as a 2-time Search Champ I could have at least received a personal email telling me they don’t love me anymore. Getting the same auto-genrated rejection notice that was sent out to the hundreds of new people who applied just hurts. I thought our relationship was deeper than that…. :(

v7ndotcom elursrebmem Link Data

Now that Google has finally caught up and surpassed (currently returning over 32k results) both Yahoo and MSN when it comes to v7ndotcom elursrebmem SERPS, I thought it might be interesting to begin tracking backlink data for the top 20 sites. I’ll try and update it every week or two.

Spreadsheet #1 contains data broken down by domain. (This sheet contains a few indented listings, so it isn’t really the top 20. I’ll remove indents on future sheets).

Spreadsheet #2 contains merged data (with dups removed) of all backlinks. (If you were a link hunter looking for every site currently linking to a v7ndotcom elursrebmem page, this would be the spreadsheet for you).

v7ndotcom elursrebmem - The Google Ass Kicking Continues

Yahoo is now showing over 400 results for v7ndotcom elursrebmem. Google has managed to return some news and blog search results, but nothing in the organic listings.

Many people are speculating that they are intentionally omitting results, but a random sampling of the Google cache dates of the pages in Yahoo’s results indicates that it’s just poor crawler performance.

Here’s an example.

Yahoo’s cache is from today, but Google’s is well over a week old. Kind of suprising considering the PR of the site and the amount of new content that gets added on a daily basis.

sr It’s Official - I’m Finally a RockstarTodd’s regular co-host Jake Baillie has decided that his plate is a bit too full at the moment to continue as co-host of WebmasterRadio’s SEO Rockstar program. I’ve been filling in for Jake over the last few weeks, so Daron decided that he might as well make it official.

Tomorrow (at 4:00 pm Pacific time) will be my first official broadcast as co-host of SEO Rockstars.

WordPress Subdomain Plugin

Subster Rejuvenation v.021 is a WordPress plugin that turns your categories into subdomains. We are now running it on this site. I’m sure there might be a couple of bugs, so post comments if you find any.

Update 1-28-06

v0.21 is a major rewrite. Here’s a list of the new features:

  • Sub categories are now nested properly. So urls will look like http://maincategory.domain.com/subcategory/post/
  • You can now make subdomains out of static pages. Sub pages will also be nested the same way sub categories are.
  • You can now tie a static page to a category subdomain. http://maincategory.domain.com/staticpage/
  • You can now use separate themes for individual subdomains.

The only real downside of v0.20 is the fact that it is now no longer compatible with WP 1.5. If you want to run this version, you will need to upgrade to WP 2.0

Update 1-16-06

I’ve just uploaded the latest version. You can now select which categories you want to be converted to subdomains by checking a box on the edit category page. Unfortunately, this feature only works with WordPress 2.0.

Update 1-13-06

I think we now have all the login/cookie issues resolved. Everything seems to be working smoothly. The last thing I think we’ll add is the ability to pick and choose which categories you want to convert to a subdomain.

Update 1-11-06

It looks like we’ve fixed all the bugs mentioned so far. Once you install it, all of your current links (including your feed and comments) should be rewritten to the appropriate subdomain. It also handles all the 301’s for your old urls, so you don’t need to spend anytime worrying about links out on the web. (I just checked Dave’s site and his links to this site all work).

Also, I forgot to mention in the initial post that you need to have wildcard dns enabled for this plugin to work. I’m not a big fan of doing that, because it can lead to duplicate content issues, so we added a default 301 for any subdomain that isn’t a real category.

Beyond that, the only other issue we’ve seen has to do with cookies. If you are logged in, it will appear that you are logged out when you move from category to category. We should have that worked out tomorrow.
